Starting Something New… Again

Why start another business? For NESTD owner John Heaton, it’s about creativity, solving problems, connecting with people, and finding a simpler way to move.

Apparently, I like starting things.

I've spent much of my career working with people, solving problems, and trying to make things work a little better than they did before. Along the way, I've also discovered that I really enjoy creating things—whether that's building something with my hands, developing an idea, running a small business, or finding a better solution to an everyday problem.

And now, somehow, I've started another business.

Welcome to NESTD.

Where the Idea Came From

I've moved more times than I care to count. Some of those moves came during my time in the Air Force, and others were simply part of life. Every move was different, but one thing was remarkably consistent: cardboard boxes are a pain.

You have to find them or buy them. Build them. Tape them. Hope the bottoms hold. Figure out which ones can actually be stacked. Then, when the move is finally over, you're left with a garage full of cardboard that needs to be broken down, recycled, stored, or given away.

There had to be an easier way.

That's what attracted me to reusable moving totes. They're sturdy. They stack neatly. They don't require tape. They help protect your belongings. And when the move is over, they go away.

We deliver. You pack. You move. We pick up.

Simple.

I Like Building Things

NESTD is about moving totes, but starting NESTD has reminded me how much I enjoy the process of building something from the ground up.

There's a creative side to starting a business that I love—the name, the logo, the website, figuring out the customer experience, designing how the totes look, developing packages and pricing, and thinking through all the little details that turn an idea into something real.

There's also the problem-solving side.

How can we make this simpler? How can we make it more convenient? What would I want if I were the customer?

Those questions keep me engaged.

And, admittedly, I just like making stuff.

But It's Really About People

The part I'm looking forward to most is meeting the people who use NESTD.

Moving usually means something significant is happening in someone's life. Maybe it's a first apartment. A new house. A growing family. A new job. Downsizing. Moving across town. Or starting over somewhere new.

There's usually a story behind the move.

I like that NESTD gets to play a small part in those moments.

We're not going to eliminate the stress of moving. But if we can remove one headache—no hunting for boxes, no taping them together, no wondering whether they'll collapse, and no mountain of cardboard afterward—then we've done something worthwhile.

Why Local Matters to Me

I want NESTD to feel different from ordering something from a large, anonymous company.

This is a local business.

When you contact NESTD, you're dealing with someone in your community. When your totes are delivered, they're coming from right here in the Dayton area. And if something doesn't go as planned, you can call us and we'll work to make it right.

That's the kind of business I want to build.

Not necessarily the biggest. Just a really good one.

So Here We Go

There's something exciting about taking an idea that exists mostly in your head and watching it slowly become real.

A name becomes a logo. A logo ends up on a tote. A website goes live. The first order comes in. Then, hopefully, one customer tells another.

I'm sure we'll learn plenty along the way. We'll make adjustments. We'll find things we hadn't thought about. And we'll continue looking for ways to make NESTD better.

That's part of the fun of starting something new.

And the name NESTD feels especially fitting. Moving isn't really about boxes—or even totes. It's about getting from one place to another and eventually settling in, getting organized, and making a new place feel like home. It's about finding your nest.

That's what I hope NESTD can help people do throughout the Dayton area: make the process of moving from one nest to the next just a little easier.

So here's to another business, another creative adventure, and helping more people around our community get moved, get settled, and get NESTD.

Pack. Stack. Move.

Get NESTD.
